Robbie Balenger, an ultra-endurance runner renowned for taking part in one-of-a-kind events, recently competed against a Tesla Model 3 electric vehicle in a rigorous man-versus-machine endurance race.
Balenger and the Tesla both started from the same location, some 250 miles outside of Austin, Texas. At an average speed of 65 mph, the car was driven until its completely charged battery died, covering a distance of 242 miles.
Balenger then ran the same path as the Tesla, battling tremendous heat, elevation changes, and little sleep, and came in 100 feet ahead of the car in little under 77 hours.
“Initially, the goal was to beat the Tesa’s distance in 72 hours – in the ultra community, a respectable time for finishing a 100-mile race is 24 hours, so I was giving myself 3x that – however, three straight days of unrelenting 90+ degree weather killed that plan,” Balenger said.
Plant-Powered
Balenger is a plant-based athlete who is dedicated to pushing his body and mind to their limits in order to spread the word about the advantages of eating a plant-based diet. He also attributes his ability to complete the several huge tasks he sets for himself on his vegan diet.
“I have two key considerations when it comes to my diet: environmentalism and performance – and Tesla excels at both. Outlasting a Tesla has been the longest single effort I have undertaken to date,” Balenger said.
