Vegan Activities for Mother’s Day

1. Visit an animal sanctuary with mom.

If you’re an animal lover who wants a compassionate alternative to exploitative captive facilities, consider visiting a wildlife sanctuary together.

To ensure the facility truly is helping the animals rather than exploiting them, ensure the facility makes every effort to replicate natural habitats and offers ample space for enrichment. They should provide permanent homes and avoid trading or borrowing animals. They also should not allow hands-on interaction with wild or exotic animals (like big cats, bears, primates or wolves). However, some places that care for rescued farmed animals allow visitors to get up close and personal.

2. Attend a vegan cooking class in person or online.

Try an online vegan cooking class through AirBnB online experiences! Consider this five star German vegan cooking class where participants make buffalo “wings” out of oyster mushrooms. Or this Italian vegan cooking class preparing Fettuccine and Ravioli, along with two different sauces. Or this Japanese vegan sushi class or Indian Samosa & Cilantro Chutney.

One of the great things about AirBnb online classes is that you and your mom can still participate together, even if you don’t live near each other. If you’re in Las Vegas  or able to travel there, you could even attend an in-person class at the Vegas Vegan Culinary School!

3. Watch an inspiring vegan movie, documentary, or vegan cooking show together.

“Aren’t vegan documentaries a little heavy for a celebratory holiday?” you might ask. Sure, plenty are. But others are more light-hearted and focus on inspirational stories and the positive benefits of veganism.

Some upbeat vegan documentaries to check out with mom include Vegan: Everyday Stories (2016), PlantPureNation (2018), The Gamechangers (2019), 10 Billion: What’s on Your Plate (2015) and Forks Over Knives (2011).

This Mother’s Day, kick back and relax with mom with Vkind’s very own three-part series and America’s first and only 100% vegan cooking competition. In Peeled, vegan chefs “cook up compassion” while competing for the top title of vegan chef and a monetary prize to donate to the nonprofit of their choosing. This inspiring and entertaining series makes for a lighthearted, yet meaningful way to spend time with mom on Mother’s Day. Tune in with Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire, IOS, Android, Unchained TV, or YouTube.

Regardless of which documentary or show you choose, be sure to bring some fun flavors of vegan popcorn and puff snacks to upgrade your movie or show watching experience!

4. Play a vegan board game!

Put your vegan knowledge to the test with this vegan board game – “Vegan Not Vegan.”

5. Take online vegan quizzes together and compare your answers.

If you want a fun activity for when you feel like lounging on the couch and scrolling on your phone with mom, check out these vegan quizzes and compare your scores.

Is this food vegan?

Which vegan celebrity are you?

What kind of animal are you?

What kind of vegetable are you?

6. Play video games that reward you for being vegan!

If you and your mom are into video games AND you’re vegan, you’ll have a blast playing these together! While many video games reward players for hunting animals, a number of video games reward you for completing the game as a vegan.

In “The Forest,” you have to beat the entire game without killing any animals. With “The Flame in the Flood,” you have to survive in a flooded post-apocalyptic America where you explore islands in a raft with your dog. To obtain the vegetarian achievement, you need to survive for twenty days without killing any animals.

In “Green Hell,” you survive twenty-five days on plant-based food, including mushrooms, coconut, bananas, and other fruits.  In “Stranded Deep,” to earn the Gone Green and Fish are Friends achievement, you must survive in the Pacific Ocean without killing any animals. Finally, in the game “Dread Hunger,” you must also survive without eating meat.

Vegan Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

1. Create an edible arrangement bouquet with (or for) your mom!

Some moms would enjoy creating this together, while others would rather just eat it! To create one as pictured, you’ll need a large, clear plastic vase; a cabbage (an eco-friendly alternative to green floral foam to insert the skewers); oranges; pineapple, strawberries; grapes; honeydew melon; oreos; and Ritz crackers with peanut butter dunked in white chocolate and decorated with sprinkles.

Find helpful directions on making your own vegan edible arrangement here

Melt dairy-free dark chocolate and white chocolate and dip some of the fruits in it. Sprinkle vegan sprinkles on some to add variety and color! For an ethical vegan white chocolate brand, check out Lagusta’s Luscious

Although you can find Enjoy Life brand white chocolate chips on GTFOit’svegan.com, this brand fails to meet human rights standards. Find a comprehensive list of vegan and ethically sourced chocolate on the Food Empowerment Project’s list of ethical chocolates, alongside numerous other brands that make dark and “milk” chocolates.

2. A homemade or premade gift basket with vegan gifts

Choose from a bottle of vegan wine, vegan beauty items, a handwritten card, vegan oat milk chocolate, and homemade treats or other ideas listed below. Assemble in a basket with tissue paper on the bottom, heavy items on the bottom and tall items in the back. Top it off with a ribbon!

Or, order a pre-made Vegan Self-Care Pamper Hamper, a self care box of handmade vegan candles, chocolates, teas, masks and sweets. Choose from candle scents like Lime, Basil & Mandarin, Amber & Lavender, English Pear, Rose & Rhubarb, Cinnamon & Vanilla and more.

3. A vegan cookbook

If your mom likes to cook, consider one of these popular vegan cookbooks: Deliciously Ella Quick & Easy Plant-Based Recipes; La Vida Verde Plant-Based Mexican Cookbook, Chloe’s Vegan Italian Kitchen, Korean Vegan, Vegan Chinese, Vegan Thai, Vegan Mediterranean or AfroVegan.
