MILKED The Documentary Has Arrived

Years in the making, the feature-length film delves deep into the dairy industry’s darkest corners in an attempt to disrupt the picture-perfect narrative meticulously crafted by animal agriculture’s major organizations.

MILKED follows activist Chris Huriwai as he travels to Aotearoa (the Mori term for New Zealand) in quest of solutions, engaging with professionals in health, ecology, politics, and business.

“We originally planned to investigate the environmental and health impacts of all animal agriculture in Aotearoa. But once we got further into researching, it was obvious that dairy was the story to tell,” stated MILKED director and producer, Amy Taylor.

And the tale isn’t always as happy-go-lucky as it appears. According to the video, the dairy sector is responsible for excessive water and land consumption, pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions, in addition to upsetting animal welfare issues.

That’s one of the reasons why the makers of MILKED started a petition to coincide with the film’s premiere. Over the next three years, the petition calls for a global decrease in dairy herds of at least 25%.

MILKED got people talking weeks before its publication, thanks to contributions from Dame Jane Goodall, Suzy Amis Cameron, and Keegan Kuhn, as well as assistance from Academy Award-winning director James Cameron.

When the documentary’s makers began a crowdfunding effort to help get the project off the ground, supporters put up $NZD100,000 in only 12 days.

As a consequence, the team increased their target by $20,000, with intentions to utilize the money not just for the film’s development, but also for activist efforts to raise awareness about the dairy industry’s environmental effect.

The money will also go toward government lobbying and financial assistance for farmers who are leaving the dairy sector in favor of animal-free labor.

“We’re so grateful for the incredible support we’ve already received from around the world… It shows how many people are passionate about exposing the truth about the dairy industry, and looking at a better way forward,” Taylor stated.
