Tofu was first created by the Chinese in 179 B.C. as an alternative for those who could not afford meat. The Society for the Protection of Animals created World Tofu Day, which was first celebrated on July 26, 2014, and is an occasion to celebrate its versatility and benefits. 

Tofu, also known as bean curd, is a popular plant-based protein source that has gained popularity worldwide. It is made by coagulating soy milk and pressing the resulting curds into blocks. It is known for its mild taste and ability to absorb flavors, making it a versatile ingredient in various dishes. Tofu is found in various forms which depend on its water content. The varieties found are extra firm, medium firm, firm, extra soft, and silken. The extra firm variety has the least amount of water whereas silken has the most water. 

Tofu offers several health benefits. It is low in calories and fat, making it a suitable option for those watching their weight. Additionally, it is a good source of protein, iron, calcium, and other essential nutrients. It is also a great choice for individuals following a vegetarian or vegan diet, as it provides a complete protein profile. Isoflavones, which comprise tofu are known to reduce the risk for cancer. It can also reduce LDL or “bad” cholesterol. 

Tofu can be used in a multitude of ways. It can be grilled, stir-fried, baked, or even blended into smoothies or desserts. Its neutral flavor allows it to take on different tastes and textures depending on the cooking method and accompanying ingredients.
