Remilk Opening World’s Largest Animal-Free Dairy Factory in Denmark

Denmark is set to welcome the world’s largest animal-free dairy plant, which will generate as much milk protein yearly as 50,000 cows once it is operational. The facility will be used by Remilk, an Israeli company, to make animal-free milk proteins via precision fermentation. These animal-free milk proteins will be utilized to make dairy-like products like milk, cheese, and yogurt without causing any harm to any cows.

The Symbiosis project, a pioneering sustainable industrial ecosystem in Kalundborg, Denmark—a country with ambitious sustainability programs and goals—will contain Remilk’s facility, which will span more than 750,000 square feet. Remilk collaborated with the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Danish Embassy in Israel, and the Israeli Embassy in Denmark to choose this location for its full-scale production plant.

“I am very happy to welcome Remilk to Denmark. This investment is a recognition of Denmark’s position as a global leader in sustainable food production and innovation… Remilk brings important knowledge to Denmark in terms of research and development with food ingredients and dairy products. I am convinced that the opening of Remilk’s production facility in Denmark will be an important step towards an even more sustainable future for the food and dairy industry,” said Anne Hougaard Jensen, Director of Invest in Denmark, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark.

Cow-Free Milk Protein

Remilk begins by replicating a cow’s DNA and placing it into yeast, which then uses it as a guide to manufacture dairy-identical milk proteins throughout the fermentation process. These proteins are extracted and mixed with vitamins, non-animal fats, and sugar to create dairy-like products that aren’t made from cows.

From an ethical standpoint, developments that do not exploit the reproductive systems of female cows would benefit the global dairy business. Antibiotics, hormones, and cholesterol are also removed from dairy during the Remilk process. Cows also emit a lot of methane, and Remilk has demonstrated that eliminating them from the dairy production equation has a lot of environmental benefits. Remilk estimates that its approach consumes 1% of the land, 4% of the greenhouse gas emissions, and 5% of the water necessary in the standard dairy manufacturing process to generate comparable goods.

Perfect Day in the United States

Perfect Day, a California-based company that has raised $750 million to pursue its objective of disconnecting the cow from the proteins the animal generates, is now the leading participant in the precision fermentation field. Perfect Day’s technology has been distributed through a variety of channels, including its own consumer packaged products division, The Urgent Company (TUC), which operates the ice cream brands Brave Robot and Modern Kitchen. TUC made its first acquisition earlier this year with CoolHaus, an ice cream company with a vegan brand that TUC is transitioning to become completely free of conventional dairy using its animal-free technology.

Perfect Day also collaborates with foodservice providers to develop animal-free products including gelato and baked goods, as well as working with established businesses to reinvent their product lines. Perfect Day’s technology was employed by General Mills to power its first animal-free cheese brand, Bold Cultr, in 2021. Perfect Day’s animal-free whey has recently been used in a first-of-its-kind “mooless” protein powder developed by nutrition business Natreve.

Perfect Day, like Remilk, is expanding its business and ramping up production in order to disrupt the global dairy market. Perfect Day announced earlier this month that it will open a second office in the United States in Salt Lake City, Utah, where it will occupy a nearly 60,000-square-foot space at The Gateway’s BioHive hub—a burgeoning campus for life sciences enterprises. Perfect Day will expand its enterprise biology business there, providing technology development services to firms wishing to follow the pioneering company’s proven road to success, including as scale-up production, IP licensing, strain services, and more.

The expansion of Perfect Day will bring 60 additional high-paying employment to the neighborhood over the next four years, according to Salt Lake City Mayor Erin MendenhalIn a statement, Mendenhall said, “Perfect Day is an exciting addition to Salt Lake City, which is home to a fast growing life sciences industry… Having evolved into a dynamic campus for life sciences companies to grow and innovate, The Gateway is a valuable partner in supporting our initiatives to grow the city’s biotech and life sciences ecosystem.”

Remilk, Perfect Day, and other companies in this growing industry hope to dissociate dairy proteins from the animals that generate them in the long run, benefiting animals, humans, and the environment. “We are not just dreaming big, we are acting upon our promise to dramatically reduce the food industry’s devastating impact on our planet… Ending animals’ historic role as providers of food for humankind is one of the most powerful measures we can take to reduce our impact on this planet,” Wolff said.
