G7 Summit Served Primarily Plant-Based Food to World Leaders

World Leaders at G7 Summit

The G7 Summit’s cuisine this year has been primarily composed of plant-based foods.

The G7 (a grouping of the seven most “advanced” economies in the world) has a summit every year to discuss the main problems facing the planet.

Leaders discussed topics including the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the climate catastrophe, and food security during this year’s conference, which was held in Germany.

The majority of the summit’s meals were plant-based to promote sustainability. Before the event, a government spokeswoman for Germany said: “The focus will be on seasonal and creative vegan and vegetarian meals.” They also said that meat and fish are merely “add-ons.”

A broad coalition of political parties supports German chancellor Olaf Scholz. The Green Party is one of those groups, and it is committed to lowering meat consumption in Germany.

The Green Party announced their support for a national meat-free day in 2013. And it proposed a meat tax in 2019.

Although the Greens mentioned animal welfare both times, sustainability is a crucial consideration. 14.5 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions are attributable to the meat sector. Additionally, it promotes deforestation and the squandering of natural resources (such as water and land).

Reducing Meat in Rich Countries

German food is renowned for being historically meat-heavy. However, all of its foreign gatherings this year have reportedly cut the use of animal products, according to Reuters.

Rich countries need to reduce their meat consumption by at least 75% to save the world, according to a research earlier this year from one of the nation’s top colleges, the University of Bonn.

The typical EU resident consumes about 80 kg of beef annually. The study’s principal author, Dr. Matin Qaim, believes that this is simply too much.

“If all humans consumed as much meat as Europeans or North Americans, we would certainly miss the international climate targets and many ecosystems would collapse,” he said.
