Natalie Portman, a vegan actress, recently applauded Chris Hemsworth for his “thoughtful” decision to delay eating meat before they shot their kissing scene in the movie Thor: Love and Thunder.

In the film, Portman (Jane Foster) and Hemsworth (Thor) have a kiss that reignites their long-forgotten relationship. On Capital FM, the Oscar winner said that Hemsworth temporarily stopped eating meat on the day of their kiss. In the interview, Portman remarked, “He’s really nice… The day we had a kiss scene he didn’t eat meat that morning because I’m vegan. And he eats meat like every half hour. Like, that was so thoughtful.”

She didn’t urge him to stop eating meat before their kiss, Portman, a vegan for eleven years, emphasized. “That’s not something I’m angry about or care about, but he was just being thoughtful… He’s just a very nice person,” Portman said.

Tessa Thompson, who appeared on the program with Portman to promote Marvel’s most recent film, said she was taken aback by such a kind act. Thompson remarked, “I didn’t even know he could go without eating meat… He’s [usually] just, like, eating bison in the morning… That’s so sweet.”

Natalie Portman’s Veganism

After reading Jonathan Safran Foer’s pro-animal rights book Eating Animals, which other celebrities including Drew Barrymore have cited for making them eat less meat, Portman, a vegetarian since she was nine years old, converted to veganism in 2011. Since then, she has frequently donated money and utilized her powerful platform to support vegan businesses and animals.

Portman made an investment in the French start-up La Vie earlier this year, which produces vegan bacon. La Vie copyrighted their vegan bacon recipe, which includes a plant-based substitute for animal fat, after the business evaluated 5,000 different recipes in an effort to accurately mimic the pig product using plants. La Vie is able to broaden its distribution outside of France’s Carrefour to the United Kingdom and other nations in Europe because to Portman’s financial support. All 550 Burger King shops in France’s Veggie Steakhouse began serving the company’s bacon in may.

Along with media magnate Oprah Winfrey, former Starbucks CEO Howard Schulz, and Roc Nation, Portman is an investor in the oat-based vegan milk company Oatly in addition to La Vie (an entertainment agency founded by rapper Jay-Z).

The most recent investment Portman made was in Tender Food, which secured $12 million in March to launch its cutting-edge line of plant-based meats. Tender, a 2020 startup founded by Harvard University scientists and engineers, utilizes its patented technology to mimic the textures of pig, poultry, and steak by producing fibrous, whole-muscle meats that rip apart much like the genuine thing.

Utilizing Her Platform

Over the years, Portman has also utilized her position to raise awareness about a range of problems, including the environmental damage caused by animal husbandry and the anti-feminist act of eating eggs and dairy. The actress discussed the relationship between many types of injustice, notably the junction of feminism and veganism, during a meeting of young activists in Los Angeles. “Only after I became active in women’s issues did I realize that my veganism was related to those very issues… Dairy and eggs don’t just come from cows and chickens, they come from female cows and female chickens. We’re exploiting female bodies and abusing the magic of female animals to create eggs and milk,” Portman said.

Portman has also spoken out against injustices against individuals, such as police violence against Black people. In order to stop police violence against Black people, she advocated defunding the police on Instagram in 2020. “When I first heard #defundthepolice, I have to admit my first reaction was fear… My whole life, police have made me feel safe. But that’s exactly the center of my white privilege: the police make me as a white woman feel safe, while my Black friends, family, and neighbors feel the opposite: police make them feel terror. And for good reason. Police are the sixth leading cause of death for Black men in this country,” Portman said.

Vegan Cuisine by Natalie Portman

Jimmy Fallon was so taken by Portman’s viral culinary videos, which featured instructions for vegan matzo ball soup, matcha doughnuts, and Buffalo cauliflower wings, that he invited her to appear on his late-night program the same year. The two video chatted during the program to discuss Portman’s movie Thor: Love and Thunder. Additionally, they talked about Portman’s vegan cooking videos, which she has been sharing on Instagram all through the COVID-19 lockdown.

“I’m obsessed with your cooking videos. You should do a show! I would watch it every single week, I love it,” Fallon said on the show.

“That’s so nice! I don’t really have a lot of skill, so I always feel like if I can do it, anyone can do it… I’ve gotten so many great recipes from Instagram from other people that I follow. And it’s definitely easier that we’re cooking every meal pretty much,” Portman responded.
