Unlock the Power of the Sea: Discover the Surprising Health Benefits of Sea Moss

All about sea moss

Sea Moss: The Ocean’s Secret to Optimal Health and Wellness

Sea moss, also known as Irish moss, is a species of red algae that grows on rocks near the shoreline in the Atlantic Ocean. It is a nutrient-dense superfood that has been used for centuries in traditional medicine due to its numerous health benefits. Sea moss is high in vitamins and minerals, including iodine, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and iron.

It is also rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, which can help to boost the immune system and protect against chronic diseases. In addition, sea moss has been shown to aid in digestion, improve skin health, and support thyroid function. As a result, it has gained popularity as a dietary supplement and is widely used in various forms, such as gel, powder, and capsule.

Doreet Dijke is a certified vegan living foods chef & author, content creator, and personal chef. She’s the host of the ElegantlyRaw Show on YouTube and offers wellness coaching and guided yoga and meditation. Rather than using the term “raw vegan,” Doreet practices mindfulness in her diet by incorporating living food, such as sea moss.

Raw Veganism And Living Food

Living foods are natural foods that are as close to their original pure form as possible to retain all their active ingredients and nutrients. Foods such as whole fruits and vegetables, fermented fruits and vegetables, and sprouted nuts and seeds can help your body produce and activate its own naturally occurring enzymes that are necessary for hormone production and chemical reactions in the body to keep it operating optimally. Dead foods are void of minerals, vitamins, and fiber and lack the nutritional value needed to fuel our bodies. These dead foods include overly processed and fast food that contain fillers or additives.

“People don’t realize, but there is chemistry to everything in life, and when you put something in the water, you are changing the molecules and the chemistry,” explained Doreet. “If you dehydrate it, you are changing it even more. If you put it in a blender or a food processor, you are changing, again, the molecules. It might still be alive—the enzymes and the nutrients in the food, but it’s not raw anymore. It’s not in its raw form. Even fruits are cooked by nature. The sun cooks everything. So, there’s not anything that’s really raw unless it’s something like a root vegetable that grows underground and doesn’t receive exposure to the sun.”

Food can be manipulated in many ways outside of traditionally cooking them on a stovetop or inside of an oven. Dehydrating, hydrating, pickling, seasoning, chopping, blending, grinding, and other food preparation techniques can change the taste of living food without removing the vitamins and nutrients that cooking with fire so often does.

The way many prepare sea moss for consumption is a perfect example of how you can prepare delicious food that is living and full of all its original nutrients. Sea Moss is harvested to extract carrageenan, a gelatinous carbohydrate often used in baked goods and cosmetics. However, sea moss can also be eaten on its own and can even be used to thicken soups and stews.

Vkind’s own, Chef Babette Davis, even sells ready-to-consume sea moss for people to purchase and incorporate in their own meals. Chef Babette The 72-year-old (yes, 72 😮) fitness enthusiast and health food promoter has even shared some tips on how to prepare sea moss in Vkind’s Peeled Tips, and has spoken about the health benefits of sea moss with the community.

Health Benefits of Sea Moss

Early studies involving sea moss have reported finding that suggest sea moss may prevent Parkinson’s Disease, which is the second-most-common degenerative disease found in older adults, and may improve the immune system. One study showed that sea moss could stop the growth of S. Enteritidis, the bacteria that causes salmonella in humans.

Sea moss is vegan, gluten-free, rich in antioxidants, and a great source of Vitamin B2, Vitamin B12, Calcium, Chromium, Magnesium, and Zinc. Sea moss is also a source of iodine which means a little goes a long way, and one should stick to one serving per day.

Studies also show that sea moss can be used to detoxify your liver and body from waste, toxins, and severe liver damage. It is a natural source of fiber that can help with digestion and regularity and can help improve joint health due to its anti-inflammatory properties.

“I work with athletes, and I’ve seen them use it, and it’s just been incredible,” Doreet explained. “They don’t miss the meat. They don’t miss the dairy or any of that because of the sea moss, and their energy just goes way up, and they find that they are much more stabilized energy because of all of the vitamins and minerals.”

Seaweed, including sea moss, is one of the best plant sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for the function of the heart and cardiovascular system. Studies suggest it may improve cholesterol balance and act as a blood thinner, reducing the risk of heart disease.

The Difference Between Sea Moss and Irish Moss

Most people use the terms sea moss, Chondrus crispus, Irish moss, and carrageen moss all interchangeably. However, sea moss is a species of red algae which grows abundantly along the rocky parts of the Atlantic coast of Europe and North America, and Irish Sea Moss has a higher potency of carrageen and only grows on the rocks in Ireland.

Doreet explains the difference between Irish Moss and Sea Moss & how to make sea moss gel for consumption in a video on her YouTube channel. She also shares other recipes that incorporate sea moss for others to try themselves.

Mindfulness, Health, and Wellness

Doreet offers in-depth education with the intention of changing our relationship with food on her YouTube channel. She refrains from telling anyone what to do but rather encourages others to be mindfully aware of their actions and to do what works best for them when it comes to health and wellness. She operates with the knowledge that everything we do or eat affects not only our own selves but everyone else around us because we are all connected.

“Raw for me means going beyond food,” Doreet explains. “It’s about going directly to the seat of who we are. There is nothing that we are or what we do that does not create more love, less love, more light, less light, more abundance, or less abundance for everyone else because we are that connected.”

You can catch Doreet on The UnCooking Show, now available to watch on the UnChained TV network. You can also learn more about the ElegantlyRaw host on her website at elegantlyrawdoreet.com.
