Cold Stone Creamery Released Their First Vegan Ice Cream Across The Country

Cold Stone Creamery’s Silk Chocolate Almondmilk Frozen Dessert became the first vegan ice cream choice yesterday. While the chain previously offered a variety of vegan sorbet flavors, the addition of Silk’s almond milk-based ice cream expands Cold Stone’s ice cream options. Cold Stone is known for its unique ice cream experience, in which customers select a base and mix-ins that crew members fold together on a frozen granite stone (hence the name “Cold Stone”).

“Cold Stone is delighted to share our very first plant-based flavor… We pride ourselves on our high flavor standards. It was important for us to innovate with an equally high quality and well-respected brand like Danone and their Silk Almondmilk product. As a result our new Silk Chocolate Almondmilk Frozen Dessert delivers on a true ice cream experience—but not made with any dairy product. Plant-based has never tasted so good. We know our guests will agree.” stated Sara Schmillen, Vice President of Marketing for Cold Stone’s parent company Kahala Brands.

Cold Stone currently provides a vegan-friendly sugar cone as well as a range of vegan mix-ins such fresh fruit, pie filling, various sorts of nuts, sprinkles, pretzels, and Oreo cookie crumbles.

Vegan Ice Cream at Cold Stone

Cold Stone will introduce a new prepared vegan ice cream treat to its menu at its 931 locations nationally to promote the arrival of its first vegan flavor. Don’t Cry Over Spilled Silk starts with a foundation of Silk vegan ice cream, which is owned by Danone North America, and then adds bananas, peanut butter, and roasted almonds.

“We’re absolutely thrilled that Cold Stone Creamery chose to work with Danone North America and the Silk brand to bring the ice cream parlor’s first-ever plant-based frozen dessert to Cold Stone customers,” Derek Neeley, Vice President of Marketing for Silk at Danone North America, stated. “Cold Stone’s creativity and leadership in frozen desserts paired with our expertise in plant-based dairy alternatives and strong track record of delivering great taste and texture, is a powerful combination for bringing a delicious, plant-based dessert collaboration to frozen treat lovers across the country.”

Major Ice Cream Chains Exploring Vegan Options

Cold Stone is the most recent big ice cream business to offer a vegan option to its menu. Baskin-Robbins, the world’s largest ice cream brand, has constantly offered sorbet as a non-dairy option, similar to Cold Stone. However, in August 2019, the chain debuted its first vegan ice cream flavors, created with coconut oil and almond butter as a base. When it released its May Flavor of the Month: Non-Dairy Strawberry Streusel last year, Baskin-Robbins became the first major ice cream shop to introduce oat milk-based ice cream. A creamy oat milk base was sprinkled with strawberries, cinnamon granola, and crunchy streusel in the vegan taste. Baskin-Robbins’ limited-edition Strawberry Streusel flavor marked the start of a new era for the company, which plans to introduce more vegan varieties created with oat milk in the future.

Larger ice cream businesses are joining smaller chains that have been experimenting in the dairy-free area for years, such as Salt & Straw, which has 25 locations primarily on the West Coast. Throughout the month of January, the business offers a “Vegandulgence” menu that includes a variety of innovative vegan dishes made from a variety of bases.

This year the menu includes Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting, Petunia’s Rainbow Sprinkled Babycakes, and Renewal Mill’s Chocolate Salted Caramel Cupcake.
