Choose to Challenge: Celebrate Vegan Women on International Women’s Day

March 8 marks International Women’s Day (IWD) annually and was first celebrated in 1911. A global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, the day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Groups around the world come together to celebrate women’s achievements or rally for women’s equality.

What’s great about IWD is that no one government, organization, charity, corporation, academic institution, women’s network, or media hub is solely responsible for the commemoration. Besides celebrating women’s achievements and raising awareness about women’s equality, IWD lobbies for accelerated gender parity and fundraises for female-focused charities

The event is marked by a theme each year. 2021’s theme is “Choose To Challenge” because a challenged world is an alert world, and from challenges come change. If you post about IWD on social media, be sure to use the hashtag #ChooseToChallenge. To explore IWD events in your area, visit internationalwomensday.com/events.

vKind recognizes women face issues of equity on multiple levels and have played a significant role in the rise of the vegan movement in recent decades. Black feminist scholar Angela Davis, for example, is a committed vegan and has spoken out about issues around our food system and using animals for profit alongside other forms of oppression that continue to plague our world.

One major way we can contribute to solving this problem is by choosing to support more women-owned businesses. Many companies listed on vKind are owned and operated by women. This is why we have a “Woman Owned” filter when you search for businesses on vKind—so you can find and support vegan businesses owned by women.

In addition, we have a “Vegan Owned” filter (for businesses that are owned by vegans), and a “Vegans of Color” filter to support businesses owned by vegan people of color. We challenge you to find another resource for vegan professionals and organizations online that has full transparency around vegan business listings! We want to make it as easy as possible for anyone using our site and app to spend their dollars not only in the VegEconomy®, but on businesses that reflect their values.

You can find great industry- and issue-specific resources about women on the IWD site at internationalwomensday.com/Mission/Work.
