5 Must Try Dishes in Madrid

Madrid Spain

From traditional Spanish tapas with a vegan twist to innovative and flavorful plant-based creations. Check out my favorite 5 dishes in Madrid, Spain.

Author: Dani Bautista

Madrid is a city that offers something for everyone, including those who follow a plant-based diet. Maybe a few years ago was not that easy for us, but today with a growing number of vegan restaurants and cafes, the capital of Spain is quickly becoming a hub for vegan cuisine. From traditional Spanish dishes with a vegan twist to innovative and flavorful plant-based creations, the city is a haven for those who love delicious food and care about their health and the environment. In this article, we’ll take a look at some of the best vegan restaurants in Madrid.

Whether you’re a local resident or just visiting, these restaurants are sure to provide a memorable and delicious dining experience.

1. Eggs Benedict at Frutas Prohibidas

@frutasprohibidasbar

One of their standout dishes at Frutas Prohibidas is the vegan eggs benedict, which offers a delicious and animal-free twist on the classic breakfast dish. The “eggs” are made from tofu and served on a bed of hearty whole grain bread, topped with rich, creamy hollandaise sauce and fresh spinach. The vegan eggs benedict at Frutas Prohibidas is a perfect combination of taste, nutrition, and ethics, making it a must-try for any vegan visiting Madrid.

2. Spanish Omelet at Santa y Pura

@santaypuravegan

Santa y Pura is a vegan restaurant in Madrid that offers an exciting selection of plant-based tapas. From olives and roasted red pepper hummus to mushroom and truffle croquettes.

But every time I go there, I can’t leave without eating two of the icons of Madrid gastronomy, in their vegan version: “tortilla de patatas” and “bocadillo de calamares.”

The first one, also known as Spanish Omelet, is a thick omelet made with eggs and potatoes, optionally including onion. In the vegan recipe, eggs are replaced by chickpea flour.

The second one is the well-known fried squid sandwich but in a guilt-free variant.

Whether you’re looking for a quick and satisfying snack or a flavorful meal, the vegan “Spanish omelet” or the” bocadillo de calamares” at Santa y Pura is sure to hit the spot.

3. Mortadella and Pistachio Pesto Pizza at Pizzi Dixie

@pizzidixie

Pizzi Dixie in Madrid offers some of the best vegan pizza in the city. Made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. Their pizzas are a delight for both the taste buds and the conscience. Whether you’re a fan of classic Margherita or prefer more creative toppings like roasted vegetables, cashew cheese, and meatless meatballs, Pizzi Dixie has got you covered.

Every time I go, I can’t help but order the Mortadella and pistachio pesto Pizza. Sounds a bit weird, but I promise it’s delicious!

The restaurant also offers delicious pasta dishes and flavorful salads, but be sure to at least share a pizza slice (or two!)

4. Suadero Tacos at La Encomienda

@laencomiendavegana

La Encomienda is a popular vegan restaurant located in Madrid, Spain, offering a variety of delicious and inventive plant-based dishes that are sure to satisfy even the most discerning palates.

They change the menu two times a year, keeping some of the most popular dishes.

My very favorite is tacos, “suadero” style. Corn tortillas filled with textured soya cooked in chilies sauce and topped with avocado-coriander sauce.

La Encomienda also offers excellent wines and local craft beers that will provide a dining experience that you won’t forget.

5. Anything at Delish Vegan Doughnuts

@delishvegandoughnuts

No! I haven’t forgotten all of you with a sweet tooth. And sorry, here I can’t recommend just one thing. From classic glazed to wild and creative flavors like matcha green tea and peanut butter chocolate, there’s a doughnut for everyone at Delish Vegan Doughnuts. They also have croissant rolls, cakes, and much more.

Be sure to go there with extra time, because it is always packed!

Bonus! – Veggie Room

@veggieroom

If you have a kitchen available, either because you live in Madrid or because you are staying in an apartment, a visit to the Veggie Room is mandatory.

This grocery store offers a wide selection of plant-based products, from fresh produce and pantry staples to an impressive selection of vegan snacks, treats, and prepared foods. And they always bring the latest and finest products!

The staff is always happy to help with product recommendations and answer any questions you may have, and with any purchase, they give you one of their famous stickers with vegan motifs.

These are just some of my favorite dishes and restaurants, but luckily today, there are so many options in my city.
