Afroveganism: A Plant-based Lifestyle for Black People

Afro-veganism is a reclamation of the plant-based lifestyle of pre-enslaved Africans. Because of the overwhelming prevalence of chronic diseases in Black communities, Afro-veganism is a critically conscientious focus on Black people’s nutritional health and welfare.
Joe G Thomas of Black Vegans of Toronto, provides a brief historical review of the nutrient-poor diet of enslaved Africans and their creative efforts to make the food they were given palatable. It will link the devastating effects of the present-day consumption of traditional foods to the disproportionately high incidences of chronic diseases and comorbidities in Black communities.
