SUMMARY:VSDC Book Club discusses "Caste" by Isabel Wilkerson (online)
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Veg Society of DC Book Club discussion of Isabel Wilkerson’s *Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents*. \nWilkerson examines the unspoken caste system — a rigid hierarchy of human rankings — that has shaped America. Linking the caste systems of America\, India\, and Nazi Germany\, she explores eight pillars that underlie caste systems across civilizations. \nTo participate you must read at least half the book—and RSVP at least two days before the meeting. \nThe VSDC Book Club began meeting online in March 2020 (previously we met in vegetarian restaurants in DC or nearby Maryland or Virginia). People who RSVP yes will get the details to join the discussion (the weekend before the meeting). The details will not be posted on meetup. \nWe read fiction and nonfiction in alternating months\, about any topic. For more information (including everything we have read over 30 years!) visit: [https://vsdc.org/Book-Club](https://vsdc.org/Book-Club)\nOr contact Beth through meet up: [http://www.meetup.com/vegan-28/message/?recipientId=1642817](http://www.meetup.com/vegan-28/message/?recipientId=1642817) \nDon’t be a no show! SUMMARY:Vegan Dinner @ Modern Love #Williamsburg
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This small event filled up right away. It may be expanded. Please RSVP for the waiting list. \nJoin us for a wonderful Vegan dinner event @ **MODERN LOVE Restaurant** serving vegan comfort food from scratch – enjoy elegant plates served in a charming cafe with modern-meets-retro decor. \nNYMag states “Isa Chandra Moskowitz — the grande dame of vegan cuisine — brought her Omaha\, Nebraska\, restaurant to Williamsburg to serve locals “swanky vegan comfort food.” The result is a menu of innovative\, plant-based renderings of various hearty classics. Moskowitz draws inspiration from her Brooklyn upbringing\, pulling\, she says\, from Italian\, Jewish\, and Jamaican cuisines\, with a healthy dose of southern cooking to boot. The truffled poutine is not to be missed and involves thick-cut fries presented in a Jenga-tower configuration\, slathered in gravy\, and topped with dollops of fresh almond ricotta. The Mac & Shews\, made with a roasted-red-pepper-and-cashew-cheese sauce\, is delightfully tangy\, while the Buffalo-cauliflower “wings” achieve ideal smokiness. The comfort-food theme carries into dessert\, where there are several different kinds of pie available. Along with wine\, beer\, and cocktails\, there’s a healthy rotation of nonalcoholic beverages that veer somewhat crunchy\, like housemade sodas and kombucha on tap. The space itself is plush and intimate without being fussy\, though the acoustics make it somewhat difficult to hear a companion when the restaurant’s full.” \nFor more info :\n**Website** – [https://www.modernlovebrooklyn.com](https://www.modernlovebrooklyn.com) \nor Follow them on Instagram **@modernlovebrooklyn** \nCome join us at Modern Love in Brooklyn\, NY for an evening of delicious plant-based cuisine! \nGOOGLE REVIEW – 4.5/5 stars\nA couple of fans reviewed as follows.. \nKris K – “Honestly\, it’s an amazing place! A gem in Brooklyn. Love the outdoors space and the quality of food. I am not a vegetarian at the very moment (taking a break) but went there because of my vegan friend and enjoyed the meal so much! Made me want to get a cook book of the owner and do more vegan meals at least sometimes. Highly recommend.” \nMegan – “As a gluten-free vegetarian\, finding comfort food can be a challenge\, but Modern Love has stolen my heart. The nachos and mac n’ shews were out-of-this-world good – I couldn’t believe they were vegan! And the buffalo cauliflower? So. Freaking. Good. If you’re looking for some next-level vegan eats in Brooklyn\, Modern Love is where it’s at.” \nFor our new members: this is an incredibly friendly and welcoming group. We are a FUN group. Join us for a stellar evening of lively conversations and great food with fellow vegetarians and vegans. \nEveryone pays for themselves. And Modern Love takes major credit cards. Easy! \n**Train Directions:** Get to Lorimer St (L Train) – About 7 min/ 0.3 mile walk to the venue! \nHope to see you there!\nKarthik 🙂 \nImage courtesy – VegOutMag.com

SUMMARY:VSDC Virtual Game Night: Fishbowl
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a VSDC remote game night featuring Fishbowl. Fishbowl is a fun and fast-paced virtual guessing game mash up. \nNote: This game is best played on a desktop or laptop computer. The game room will be opened at 7:50 pm for those who need a little extra time getting set up and then locked at 8:10 pm\, so please be on time. \nHere’s how to play: After everyone navigates over to the website\, https://fishbowl-game.com/\, and puts in the code to join the game\, players are asked to write down a few words or phrases on “cards” that will be guessed later. Players are organized into teams and will alternate turns\, giving clues to their teammates to guess as many cards as possible against the clock. The 3 rounds feature: \nTaboo: Use words to describe the word or phrase on the card\, without any acting or gestures. You cannot use any part of the word or phrase! \nCharades: Without words or sounds\, act and use gestures to communicate the word or phrase on the card. \nPassword: You can say exactly one word to describe the word or phrase on the card\, no more! You’ll rely on your team’s memory and association. \nThe team that guesses the most cards across all rounds wins! \nDon’t worry if you’ve never played Fishbowl. All are welcome and we’ll go over the basic rules at the start of the event. There are additional details and instructions here: https://fishbowl-game.com/ if you would like to (re)familiarize yourself with the game. \nBy signing up for this event you are agreeing to abide by our harassment policy https://vsdc.org/policies/ \nDon’t be a no show! If your plans change\, update your RSVP so that another may attend. \n*** \nVSDC (http://www.vsdc.org) is a clear and consistent voice for improving the lives of all beings through education on the benefits of a vegan diet & lifestyle. SUMMARY:Veg Night Out at Mr. Purple - the Hotel Indigo Rooftop Bar
DESCRIPTION:Welcome springtime\, at our March 20th Veg Night Out with fellow veg’ns at Mr. Purple\, the trendy Lower East Side rooftop bar at Hotel Indigo. It will be a perfect location for us to chill and enjoy the evening. \n**The New Yorker** says of Mr. Purple: “The interior\, meant to evoke an artist’s loft\, leads to two outdoor patios\, with chaise lounges\, purple chairs\, staggeringly gorgeous views\, and a swimming pool.” \n**The New York Times** writes\, “The elevator opens to a dark\, spacious room illuminated by filament bulbs and squiggles of neon. The high ceiling has exposed pipes resembling a box of bucatini\, framed by a wooden exoskeleton. Below\, banquettes and ottomans are flanked by shelves of plants\, candles and a woven dreamcatcher-y tangle. Two roof decks offer wonderful views of the city …” \nAccording to **Timeout NY**\, Mr. Purple is “a 15th-floor bar that crowns the Hotel Indigo and takes its name from the late guerrilla-gardening icon Adam Purple. Detractors claim that Purple—a modern-day hippie who dedicated years to fighting urban decay—would have scoffed at such an appropriation of his name\, while the owners defend the choice as being in-line with their commitment to the nabe.” \nWith all the wonderful vegetarians and vegans who attend each of our events\, every event we do is liked by our members\, but our “Veg Night Out!” events are the most popular of all. People enjoy the fact they can mingle (speak with lots of different people)\, and they love the beautiful venues that we go to. Join us for a stellar evening of lively conversation and lovely surroundings with fellow vegetarians and vegans. \nThere is no cover and no minimum. But please do buy a drink or two\, or as many as you like. \n**For our new members:** this is an incredibly friendly and welcoming group. Come to our Veg Night Out! at Mr. Purple and make new friends. \nOur event officially runs from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. There’s a good chance we may stay past 9:00pm. \n**Train Directions:** Take the F train to 2nd Ave. \n**Where to meet:** Go to the rooftop bar\, Mr. Purple\, on the 15th floor. We will be outside on the terrace. Look for our large group. \nEddie

But as her rural community becomes the epicenter of the pork industry’s explosion in America\, Elsie’s struggle to save her family’s home and heritage becomes a battle against one of the world’s most powerful companies and its deadly pollution. After decades of defeat\, Elsie\, her neighbors\, and a gutsy small-town lawyer take the world’s largest pork company to court. The residents risk everything for their rights to clean air\, pure water\, and a life free from the stench of shit. \nA story about the power of love for one’s family and community to triumph over colossal forces of injustice\, The Smell of Money calls upon viewers to see the people behind what’s on our plates––and to join the fight for a better future for us all. \nFilm trailer: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgonVE-atgQ&t=1s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgonVE-atgQ&t=1s) \n*For important updates regularly monitor the “comments” section below.*\n*Don’t be a no show! SUMMARY:[Cancelled] Hike: Prince William Forest National Park\, Triangle\, VA
DESCRIPTION:[Cancelled] Join us for a 7 mile hike through the largest protected natural area in the DMV\, Prince William Forest Park. Encompassing over 18\,500 acres and rich in history\, this land was once home to an enclave of formerly enslaved people which was gradually converted from the late 1930’s to national parkland. \nWe’ll meet in front of the Visitors Center and take the Pyrite Mine Loop Trail beyond the picnic area to the right. From there we’ll pick up a loop trail that winds through one of the country’s best examples of Eastern Piedmont forest. If we’re lucky we’ll see evidence of the park’s wildlife\, including beavers\, deer\, and squirrels. \nThis hike is rated as difficult largely due to its length and terrain. Prepare to encounter uneven and possibly muddy woodland trails\, with 600 feet of elevation gain\, by wearing sturdy hiking shoes and appropriate clothing. \nPark map: https://www.nps.gov/prwi/planyourvisit/maps.htm \nThis event is for those who are fully vaccinated only. Also please do not attend if you are sick or have been near someone who thinks they may have or have been exposed to COVID-19. \nTransportation: Park at the Pine Grove Picnic Area. We’ll meet in front of the adjacent Visitors Center. Note that there is a $20 fee to enter the park\, which is waived for U.S. National Park Service annual or lifetime pass holders. If you can offer a ride\, please post in the comments section with metro station or other accessible location for pick up. Carpooling is a great way to meet people and help the environment! \nDog friendly?: Yes. Please keep your dog leashed at all times. \nBathroom Facilities: None. \nFood/Water: Bring your own vegan snacks and (non-alcoholic) beverage to enjoy mid hike. Please carry plenty of water! \nWeather: Be prepared! We will hike rain or shine\, but if conditions pose a danger\, we’ll cancel the hike and post a notice in the “comments” section. We suggest that hikers wear comfortable footwear and suitable clothing made from quick-dry\, synthetic fabrics\, as cotton can lead to uncomfortable blisters and life-threatening hypothermia in case of inclement weather. \n*For important updates regularly monitor the “comments” section below.*\n*Don’t be a no show! If your plans change\, update your RSVP.*\n*When you sign up to join a hike you automatically acknowledge\nVSDC hikes Liability Waiver: https://vsdc.org/activity-waiver/ and agree to abide by our harassment policy https://vsdc.org/policies/*\n*Please also view the Rules listed at the end of this description*\n*Please read The 10 Essentials of Hiking: https://americanhiking.org/resources/10essentials/ * \nRULES \nPets: When hikes are organized in dog-friendly areas\, hikers are invited to bring their pet(s). However\, dogs are the sole responsibility of the owner(s) who brought them; should be up-to-date on their vaccinations & in possession of the relevant tags; and should be under the control of their owner(s) at all times. Dogs that demonstrate consistently aggressive or otherwise out-of-control behavior will be banned from future hikes. Owners should come prepared to dispose of their dogs’ waste in appropriate receptacles. \nAlcohol/Smoking/Intoxicants: Use of intoxicants such as alcohol\, cigarettes and/or illegal substances is banned during the hikes.\n— \nVSDC (http://www.vsdc.org) is a clear and consistent voice for improving the lives of all beings through education on the benefits of a vegan diet & lifestyle. People enjoy the fact they can mingle (speak with lots of different people)\, and they love the beautiful venues that we go to. Join us for a stellar evening of lively conversation and lovely surroundings with fellow vegetarians and vegans. \nFor our new members: this is an incredibly friendly and welcoming group. **We’ll be hanging out by the main bar area**\, and you can get to know all our wonderful members. \nThis event has no cover and no minimum. But please do buy a drink or two\, or as many as you like. The venue requests that you dress appropriately: business\, business casual or smart casual. \nJoin us for a fun and relaxed evening socializing with fellow vegetarians and vegans. \nClosest trains stations are (1) to Houston St\, (C) & (E) to Spring St\, followed by (A) to Canal. \nEddie

SUMMARY:VSDC Book Club discusses “March” by Geraldine Brooks
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Veg Society of DC Book Club discussion of “March” by Geraldine Brooks. \nGeraldine Brooks creates a story for the absent father in Louisa May Alcott’s classic\, Little Women\, who had gone off to war. To evoke him\, Brooks turned to the journals and letters of Bronson Alcott\, Louisa May’s real father — and a vegetarian advocate. March won the [2006 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction](https://www.pulitzer.org/winners/geraldine-brooks). \nTo participate you must read at least half the book—and RSVP at least two days before the meeting. (This is a Sunday afternoon meeting. The book club will return to Wednesday night meetings in March.) \nThe VSDC Book Club began meeting online in March 2020 (previously we met in vegetarian restaurants in DC or nearby Maryland or Virginia). People who RSVP yes will get the details to join the discussion (during the week before the meeting). If your plans change\, update your RSVP.
