SUMMARY:Picnic & The Smell of Money Documentary (DC Environmental Film Festival)
DESCRIPTION:Weather permitting\, let’s gather at 6pm in the Navy Memorial Plaza\, right in front of the Naval Heritage Center at 701 Pennsylvania Avenue NW\, Washington\, DC 20004\, for a picnic before the 7pm screening of [The Smell of Money ](https://dceff.eventive.org/schedule/the-smell-of-money-63f112f471a7bf006fc40a0b?fbclid=IwAR1S2PhtvYdPQxeBpWe-Zj24XgNn8QTxcuoquqsl-3ZH51UlbdMD7AURw4M)documentary\, which is being shown as part of the DC Environmental Film Festival (DCEFF) at the Naval Heritage Center. \nYou can bring your own beverages and vegan food or pick up something from nearby HipCityVeg (a six minute walk away)\, Teasim (a one minute walk away) or another restaurant of your choice. We should be able to find some seating on steps around the plaza. If the weather is bad\, we will scratch the picnic part of this Meetup. \nYou must purchase a ticket for the film in advance on the DCEFF website [here. ](https://dceff.eventive.org/schedule/the-smell-of-money-63f112f471a7bf006fc40a0b) Don’t hesitate because tickets can sell out. Seating is general admission. \nThe film will be followed by an on-stage conversation with [Shawn Bannon](https://dceff.org/filmmaker/bannon-shawn/) (Director) and [Jamie Berger](https://dceff.org/filmmaker/berger-jamie/) (Writer/Producer). \nHere’s a description of the film:\nWhen a corporate hog farm moves in––uninvited––on land her grandfather had purchased after claiming his freedom from slavery\, Elsie Herring decides to fight back. But as her rural community becomes the epicenter of the pork industry’s explosion in America\, Elsie’s struggle to save her family’s home and heritage becomes a battle against one of the world’s most powerful companies and its deadly pollution. After decades of defeat\, Elsie\, her neighbors\, and a gutsy small-town lawyer take the world’s largest pork company to court. The residents risk everything for their rights to clean air\, pure water\, and a life free from the stench of shit. \nA story about the power of love for one’s family and community to triumph over colossal forces of injustice\, The Smell of Money calls upon viewers to see the people behind what’s on our plates––and to join the fight for a better future for us all. \nFilm trailer: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgonVE-atgQ&t=1s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgonVE-atgQ&t=1s) \n*For important updates regularly monitor the “comments” section below.*\n*Don’t be a no show! SUMMARY:Veg Night Out at Mr. Purple - the Hotel Indigo Rooftop Bar
DESCRIPTION:Welcome springtime\, at our March 20th Veg Night Out with fellow veg’ns at Mr. Purple\, the trendy Lower East Side rooftop bar at Hotel Indigo. It will be a perfect location for us to chill and enjoy the evening. \n**The New Yorker** says of Mr. Purple: “The interior\, meant to evoke an artist’s loft\, leads to two outdoor patios\, with chaise lounges\, purple chairs\, staggeringly gorgeous views\, and a swimming pool.” \n**The New York Times** writes\, “The elevator opens to a dark\, spacious room illuminated by filament bulbs and squiggles of neon. The high ceiling has exposed pipes resembling a box of bucatini\, framed by a wooden exoskeleton. Below\, banquettes and ottomans are flanked by shelves of plants\, candles and a woven dreamcatcher-y tangle. Two roof decks offer wonderful views of the city …” \nAccording to **Timeout NY**\, Mr. Purple is “a 15th-floor bar that crowns the Hotel Indigo and takes its name from the late guerrilla-gardening icon Adam Purple. Detractors claim that Purple—a modern-day hippie who dedicated years to fighting urban decay—would have scoffed at such an appropriation of his name\, while the owners defend the choice as being in-line with their commitment to the nabe.” \nWith all the wonderful vegetarians and vegans who attend each of our events\, every event we do is liked by our members\, but our “Veg Night Out!” events are the most popular of all. People enjoy the fact they can mingle (speak with lots of different people)\, and they love the beautiful venues that we go to. Join us for a stellar evening of lively conversation and lovely surroundings with fellow vegetarians and vegans. \nThere is no cover and no minimum. But please do buy a drink or two\, or as many as you like. \n**For our new members:** this is an incredibly friendly and welcoming group. Come to our Veg Night Out! at Mr. Purple and make new friends. \nOur event officially runs from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. There’s a good chance we may stay past 9:00pm. \n**Train Directions:** Take the F train to 2nd Ave. \n**Where to meet:** Go to the rooftop bar\, Mr. Purple\, on the 15th floor. We will be outside on the terrace. Look for our large group. \nEddie

SUMMARY:VSDC Virtual Game Night: Fishbowl
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a VSDC remote game night featuring Fishbowl. Fishbowl is a fun and fast-paced virtual guessing game mash up. \nNote: This game is best played on a desktop or laptop computer. The game room will be opened at 7:50 pm for those who need a little extra time getting set up and then locked at 8:10 pm\, so please be on time. \nHere’s how to play: After everyone navigates over to the website\, https://fishbowl-game.com/\, and puts in the code to join the game\, players are asked to write down a few words or phrases on “cards” that will be guessed later. Players are organized into teams and will alternate turns\, giving clues to their teammates to guess as many cards as possible against the clock. The 3 rounds feature: \nTaboo: Use words to describe the word or phrase on the card\, without any acting or gestures. You cannot use any part of the word or phrase! \nCharades: Without words or sounds\, act and use gestures to communicate the word or phrase on the card. \nPassword: You can say exactly one word to describe the word or phrase on the card\, no more! You’ll rely on your team’s memory and association. \nThe team that guesses the most cards across all rounds wins! \nDon’t worry if you’ve never played Fishbowl. All are welcome and we’ll go over the basic rules at the start of the event. There are additional details and instructions here: https://fishbowl-game.com/ if you would like to (re)familiarize yourself with the game. \nBy signing up for this event you are agreeing to abide by our harassment policy https://vsdc.org/policies/ \nDon’t be a no show! SUMMARY:Vegan Dinner @ Modern Love #Williamsburg
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This small event filled up right away. It may be expanded. Please RSVP for the waiting list. \nJoin us for a wonderful Vegan dinner event @ **MODERN LOVE Restaurant** serving vegan comfort food from scratch – enjoy elegant plates served in a charming cafe with modern-meets-retro decor. \nNYMag states “Isa Chandra Moskowitz — the grande dame of vegan cuisine — brought her Omaha\, Nebraska\, restaurant to Williamsburg to serve locals “swanky vegan comfort food.” The result is a menu of innovative\, plant-based renderings of various hearty classics. Moskowitz draws inspiration from her Brooklyn upbringing\, pulling\, she says\, from Italian\, Jewish\, and Jamaican cuisines\, with a healthy dose of southern cooking to boot. The truffled poutine is not to be missed and involves thick-cut fries presented in a Jenga-tower configuration\, slathered in gravy\, and topped with dollops of fresh almond ricotta. The Mac & Shews\, made with a roasted-red-pepper-and-cashew-cheese sauce\, is delightfully tangy\, while the Buffalo-cauliflower “wings” achieve ideal smokiness. The comfort-food theme carries into dessert\, where there are several different kinds of pie available. Along with wine\, beer\, and cocktails\, there’s a healthy rotation of nonalcoholic beverages that veer somewhat crunchy\, like housemade sodas and kombucha on tap. The space itself is plush and intimate without being fussy\, though the acoustics make it somewhat difficult to hear a companion when the restaurant’s full.” \nFor more info :\n**Website** – [https://www.modernlovebrooklyn.com](https://www.modernlovebrooklyn.com) \nor Follow them on Instagram **@modernlovebrooklyn** \nCome join us at Modern Love in Brooklyn\, NY for an evening of delicious plant-based cuisine! \nGOOGLE REVIEW – 4.5/5 stars\nA couple of fans reviewed as follows.. \nKris K – “Honestly\, it’s an amazing place! A gem in Brooklyn. Love the outdoors space and the quality of food. I am not a vegetarian at the very moment (taking a break) but went there because of my vegan friend and enjoyed the meal so much! Made me want to get a cook book of the owner and do more vegan meals at least sometimes. Highly recommend.” \nMegan – “As a gluten-free vegetarian\, finding comfort food can be a challenge\, but Modern Love has stolen my heart. The nachos and mac n’ shews were out-of-this-world good – I couldn’t believe they were vegan! And the buffalo cauliflower? So. Freaking. Good. If you’re looking for some next-level vegan eats in Brooklyn\, Modern Love is where it’s at.” \nFor our new members: this is an incredibly friendly and welcoming group. We are a FUN group. Join us for a stellar evening of lively conversations and great food with fellow vegetarians and vegans. \nEveryone pays for themselves. And Modern Love takes major credit cards. Easy! \n**Train Directions:** Get to Lorimer St (L Train) – About 7 min/ 0.3 mile walk to the venue! \nHope to see you there!\nKarthik 🙂 \nImage courtesy – VegOutMag.com

Everyone orders their own food & beverages and pays the restaurant directly. \nVSDC THANKS Sarah Cusack who is now leading our LGBTQIA+ events! \nWHAT: Dinner at sPACYcLOUd Lounge in DC. Bring fellow queers\, even if they’re not vegan. It’s always fun to introduce people to scrumptious vegan food.\nWHEN: Friday\, April 7th\, 7:15pm-9:15pm\nWHERE: sPACYcLOUd Lounge\, 2309 18th St NW\, Washington\, DC\nPARKING: There is street parking\, but it might be tricky. The nearest Metro is Woodley Park/Adams Morgan\, which is a 15 minute walk from the restaurant. There are also buses that get you a little closer. \nPlease RSVP early\, as we would like to keep the owner aware of how many people to expect. \nIn an effort to reduce no shows for space-limited events\, we are now tracking those who fail to show up and do not change their RSVP beforehand. SUMMARY:VeganHood - Spring Picnic - New Harlem Vegan Venue - Limited Attendance
DESCRIPTION:**VeganHood** has opened in Harlem\, to a lot of buzz. **Patch.com** headlines: **”Hot New Harlem Restaurant Aims To ‘Bridge Veganism And The Hood'”.** \nFounded by sisters **Janine Smalls** and **Lanise Herman-Thomas**\, Patch writes that the sisters “**did not expect that they would end up opening one of Harlem’s most popular new restaurants**.” \nCome join us as we check what all the fuss is about\, and see what even non-vegans are celebrating! \n**From the VeganHood site:** \nWe saw a need in our neighborhood for food that was similar to what we grew up eating but instead of it being animals it needed to be 100% plant based. We thought “how could we get people to love vegan food when they believe that all vegans eat are leaves and water? How can we show them that a vegan lifestyle doesn’t have to be bland and that it can be tasty and healthier?” \nWe knew we needed to show people better than we could tell them by creating dishes we ate at home and they themselves would make or order at restaurants. Things like our Saint Nick Fried Chick’n\, soy free mac & cheese\, and deserts like our Oreo puddings\, comfort foods that’s filling and recognizable. \n—————————————– \n**Website for placing pick-up orders (not delivery):** [https://grubhub.com](https://grubhub.com) \n**Vegan Picnic:** A few hours before the event please place your food **pick-up** order in your favorite mobile app. such as Grubhub\, Uber Eats\, Doordash\, etc. We will be carrying out our orders for a picnic in a nearby park. (In case of inclement weather on the day of the event\, we’ll reschedule.) \n**We are an extremely friendly and welcoming group.** To our new members: Come to the meetup and make new friends! We are delighted to meet you\, and to welcome you to the group. \n**Train Directions:** Take the **B\, C\, 2\, or 3 Trains to 116th Street**. VeganHood is located at 2100 Frederick Douglass Blvd. (bet. W. 113th St. & W. 114th St.) \n*****NOTE:** While this event officially starts at 7:00pm\, feel free to get here early and order around 6:30pm or after\, to spread out the order placement. Or get here a little after 7:00pm\, also to spread out the order placement. Or\, you may order while on your way to the restaurant.******* \nMichael

SUMMARY:Veg*n Dinner @ Baar Baar NYC #Bowery
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a wonderful Veg*n dinner event @ **BAAR BAAR NYC Restaurant** serving creative\, sophisticated Indian dishes & cocktails in a colorful\, banquette-lined setting. \nMICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View states “This delightful restaurant delivers contemporary Indian cuisine that brings a refined touch to familiar South Asian plates. All thanks are due to Chef Sujan Sarkar\, who landed in NY fresh from his success in San Francisco. Baar Baar may bill itself as a gastropub\, but dining is the focus here. In fact\, its vast\, inventive menu is filled with such delicious condiments\, as if to prove that no detail is too small for this kitchen” \nFor more info :\n**Website** – [http://baarbaarnyc.com/](http://baarbaarnyc.com/) \nor Follow them on Instagram **@baarbaarnyc** \nCome join us at Baar Baar NYC for an evening of delicious veg*n cuisine! Please note that they do have a Vegan Menu. \nGOOGLE REVIEW – 4/5 stars\nA couple of fans reviewed as follows.. \nSandra – “What a fun place…. As a group we tried pretty much every type of entree in their menu. Everyone commented on how delicious their meals were. Most of my party was vegetarian and vegan and they had great options for us. The server was not very attentive and we had to flag them down whenever we needed anything but it was kind of busy so we understood. …” \nForum – “The food here is phenomenal. I don’t think I’ve ever had such creative Indian dishes other than at Junoon. The dishes are so flavorful\, my mouth is watering as I write this review. My favorite dishes are the malai paneer pinwheel\, cauliflower\, avocado and green chickpea bhel\, and the black dairy dal (dal makhani). I also enjoy their chickpea curry . The food can be a bit spicy but if you ask them to make it mild\, they will do so. They also do a great job plating it in a beautiful manner and that just enhances things. They also are willing to make food Jain for you and I really appreciate that kind of flexibility from an upscale Indian restaurant. I’ve been to other upscale places in the city and they get a bit snobbish about it. They also have a separate vegan menu which is a nice addition..” \nFor our new members: this is an incredibly friendly and welcoming group. We are a FUN group. Join us for a stellar evening of lively conversations and great food with fellow vegetarians and vegans. \nEveryone pays for themselves. And Baar Baar takes major credit cards. Easy! \n**Train Directions:** Get to 2nd Ave (F Train) Use the Exit via 2nd Ave & Houston St at NW corner – About 1 min/ 459 ft walk to the venue! \nHope to see you there!\nKarthik 🙂 \nImage courtesy – baarbaarnyc.com

You cannot use any part of the word or phrase! \nCharades: Without words or sounds\, act and use gestures to communicate the word or phrase on the card. \nPassword: You can say exactly one word to describe the word or phrase on the card\, no more!
