SUMMARY:Veg Night Out! Holiday Drinks at Beauty & Essex
DESCRIPTION:Let’s celebrate our 2022 holiday Veg Night Out with fellow veg’ns at the posh speakeasy bar\, Beauty & Essex by the Lower East Side. With a functioning pawn shop\, “hip” and “glamorous”\, it is a trendy\, new nightlife destination. It will be a perfect location for us to chill and enjoy the evening. \n**New York Times:** “The lounge occupies what used to be M. Katz\, a furniture store\, next to the Essex Street Market. The front is set up as a pawn shop\, with Flying V guitars and a Raymond Chandler-esque blonde behind the register. A back door leads to a night life emporium designed by AvroKo. The ground floor is a sleek restaurant … Upstairs\, past a staircase that spirals around a soaring chandelier\, is a wood-paneled lounge with divans and another bar. ” \nWhat better way to spend your holiday seasons with your fellow vegetarian/vegan friends at this gorgeous venue \nFrom 6:30pm-9:00pm\n**Beauty & Essex (2nd Floor Bar)**\n146 Essex Street\, New York \nhttp://beautyandessex.com/home/ \nFrom **New York Magazine:** “… Here the bi-level space oozes early-sixties glam\, from the two-story chandelier to the peacock-themed grand dining room to the free-flowing pink Champagne in the ladies’ room… ” \n**NYC Official Guide:** “Hidden behind a functioning pawn shop\, Beauty & Essex is a true gem on the Lower East Side and widely regarded as one of New York’s most beautiful restaurants. Head inside and past the two-story crystal chandelier and settle in the sumptuous banquet seating …” \n**TimeOut:** “Chef Chris Santos (Stanton Social) brings his globally inflected small plates to an another AvroKO-designed fantasyland on the Lower East Side. A curated thrift store in front hawks vintage jewelry\, boom boxes and guitars; a gigantic one-story crystal chandelier fronts a grand\, curving staircase; and the main dining room opens up under a massive skylight. ” \nFrom **Zagat:** “Behind an ‘extra-cool’ hidden entrance in a pawn shop\, this ‘vibrant’ LES resto-lounge draws a ‘glam crowd’ to ‘splurge’ on ‘imaginative’ New American bites in a bi-level space that ‘truly is a beauty’; if you ‘don’t mind a bit of shameless trendiness’ …\, it ‘does impress.’” \nWith all the wonderful vegetarians and vegans who attend each of our events\, every event we do is liked by our members\, but our “Veg Night Out!” events are the most popular of all. People enjoy the fact they can mingle (speak with lots of different people)\, and they love the beautiful venues that we go to. Join us for a stellar evening of lively conversation and lovely surroundings with fellow vegetarians and vegans. \nFor our new members: this is an incredibly friendly and welcoming group. We’ll be hanging out by the main bar area\, and you can get to know all our wonderful members. \nThis event has no cover and no minimum. But please do buy a drink or two\, or as many as you like. There is a full selection of non-alcoholic beverages available if you prefer not to drink alcohol. The venue requests that you dress appropriately: business\, business casual or smart casual. \n**Where to meet: We will be at the 2nd floor bar area. Be sure to walk through the back door of the pawn shop in front\, the main venue is hidden behind this door. Once inside the main venue walk upstairs to the elegant second floor bar.** \n**Train Directions:** Take the F train to Delancey Street\, or the J\, M\, or Z trains to Essex Street. \nJoin us for an elegant\, fun and relaxed night of socializing with fellow vegetarians and vegans. \nHappy Holidays! \nEddie

SUMMARY:VSDC Virtual Game Night: Fishbowl
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a VSDC remote game night featuring Fishbowl. Fishbowl is a fun and fast-paced virtual guessing game mash up. \nNote: This game is best played on a desktop or laptop computer. The game room will be opened at 7:50 pm for those who need a little extra time getting set up and then locked at 8:10 pm\, so please be on time. \nHere’s how to play: After everyone navigates over to the website\, https://fishbowl-game.com/\, and puts in the code to join the game\, players are asked to write down a few words or phrases on “cards” that will be guessed later. Players are organized into teams and will alternate turns\, giving clues to their teammates to guess as many cards as possible against the clock. The 3 rounds feature: \nTaboo: Use words to describe the word or phrase on the card\, without any acting or gestures. You cannot use any part of the word or phrase! \nCharades: Without words or sounds\, act and use gestures to communicate the word or phrase on the card. \nPassword: You can say exactly one word to describe the word or phrase on the card\, no more! You’ll rely on your team’s memory and association. \nThe team that guesses the most cards across all rounds wins! \nDon’t worry if you’ve never played Fishbowl. All are welcome and we’ll go over the basic rules at the start of the event. There are additional details and instructions here: https://fishbowl-game.com/ if you would like to (re)familiarize yourself with the game. \nBy signing up for this event you are agreeing to abide by our harassment policy https://vsdc.org/policies/ \nDon’t be a no show! SUMMARY:Veg*n Dinner @ Seeds & Weeds #SouthStSeaport
DESCRIPTION:***Arrive any time between 6:30pm and 9:00pm and stay as long as you want or leave when you need to. Arriving at 7:00pm or 8:00pm is perfectly great. This is an Indoor dining event.*** \nHappy New Year & to start of Veganuary 2023 – Join us for a wonderful Veg*n dinner event @ **SEEDS & WEEDS Restaurant**\, a seasonally driven plant-based eatery\, serving boundary-defying vegan and vegetarian food in a warm and verdant enclave with views of the Brooklyn Bridge. Located in an acclaimed Food Hall at Tin Building by Jean-Georges (same group behind ABCV Restaurant) \nKenny Yang from theinfatuation.com states – “Seeds & Weeds serves vegetarian and vegan food. Start with a green juice in a wine glass\, then try the blue corn sourdough bread with fantastic hazelnut butter or the sweet\, spicy\, and umami-rich tomato broth with corn-and-shiitake-stuffed wontons (our favorite thing here). This second floor restaurant has a bunch of potted plants\, light wood furniture\, and pastel green seating\, and it’s the only place to eat in the Tin Building where you can get a view of the East River. So try to get a table next to a window.” \nFor more info :\n**Website** – [https://www.tinbuilding.com/restaurants/SEEDS__WEEDS](https://www.tinbuilding.com/restaurants/SEEDS__WEEDS) \nor Follow them on Instagram **@tinbuilding** \nCome join us for Dinner in 2023! \nGOOGLE REVIEW – 4.8/5 stars\nA couple of fans reviewed as follows.. \nCharles Hale – “The “Tin Building\,” which was once part of NYC’s Fulton Fish Market\, located at the South Street Seaport\, has been converted into a food emporium and is now open. There are many interesting restaurants\, a food market\, bars and it’s located on the water. We began walking through the emporium and were soon tempted to try one of its many restaurants. We decided on Seeds and Weeds\, where we shared Charcoal Grilled Brussels Sprouts made with yuba\, pickled apple and black garlic. The flavors were sensational; a memorable dish. And a bonus….try to get a seat a near where you have a view of the East River. Looking forward to revisiting.” \nDavid Lee – “Vegan restaurant but one dish has egg in it. Food is interesting and tasty. They say the dishes are small and recommended 3 dishes per person but we’re fine with 4 dishes\, but I could see many people wanting more. Vibes: full of plants and wood interiors. Service was excellent. Server gave recommendations and seems engaged. Also\, I had a small water cup but they were attentive and they usually came to refill before I ran dry. SUMMARY:Vegan Dinner @ Vegetarian Dim Sum House in Chinatown
DESCRIPTION:***Arrive any time between 6:30pm and 9:00pm and stay as long as you want or leave when you need to. Arriving at 7:00pm or 8:00pm is perfectly great.*** \nJoin us for dinner at Vegetarian Dim Sum House in Chinatown\, one of our perennial favorites. Established in 1986\, it’s a mainstay of Chinatown New York City! \nI have been a patron of Vegetarian Dim Sum House for many years\, and it never ceases to impress me. To find vegetarian versions of all the various delicacies with their different flavors\, both sweet and salty\, is amazing! Dumplings of all sorts\, “treasure boxes”\, vegetable buns\, mini spring rolls\, fried bananas — these are just some of the huge varieties of dim sum available. Almost everything is vegan\, just ask the waitstaff to be sure. \nTime Out: “After ambling past Chinatown shop windows displaying glistening ducks and flopping fish\, vegetarians will be relieved to step into this meat-free haven—even if the dark-green carpeting and pale-green walls call to mind a corporate office. The menu offers excellent and convincing mock-meat dishes\, including delicate “shrimp” dumplings (made with rice flour\, yams and tofu)\, crispy\, slightly sweet sesame “chicken” (deep-fried bean curd skin) and Peking “spareribs”—yams doused in a peppery sauce. In place of dessert\, order a fresh fruit shake—kiwi is our favorite.” \nVogue: “… Vegetarian Dim Sum House was the first vegetarian dim sum restaurant in Chinatown\, according to its owner Frankie Chu. … ‘The watercress dumplings at Vegetarian Dim Sum House are crazy good\,’ says Young\, who notes they are made with watercress\, mock ham and mushrooms for the filling and ha gao dough for the wrapping. ‘Make sure you use their house dipping sauce.’ … Young also recommends trying the spinach dumpling\, snow pea leaves dumpling\, and vegetarian mock shrimp dumplings” \nMedium: “This restaurant may not be a looker\, but that’s okay — it’s not what they set out to do. Instead of worrying about aesthetics even in the slightest\, Vegetarian Dim Sum House is focused on their food: their tagline is ‘Mock meats and more\,” and they certainly deliver on that promise.'” \nCome anytime between 6:30pm and 9:30pm. \nFor those of you who have never attended one of our Meetup events: this is an incredibly friendly & welcoming group. It will be easy to find our group: we will inside the restaurant. Also\, everyone pays for their own meal. Easy! \nTrain Directions: The closest trains are the J\, Z\,4\, 6\, N\, Q\, R\, & W to Canal St\, and B & D to Grand St. Please note any MTA reroutes during the day of event. \n***Arrive any time between 6:30pm and 9:00pm and stay as long as you want or leave when you need to. Arriving at 7:00pm or 8:00pm is perfectly great.*** \nJoin us for a delicious vegan dimsum dinner in Chinatown on Wednesday\, January 18th. \nEddie

SUMMARY:Virtual Documentary Night
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Documentary Night is a monthly online event designed to give people the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions on a wide range of topics with people from various backgrounds. This Virtual Documentary Night\, in honor of Veganuary\, is in collaboration with: \n\nAPEX Advocacy\nFactory Farming Awareness Coalition\nAfro Vegan Society\nGeorgia Tech Veggie Jackets\n\nAPEX Advocacy is an Atlanta based nonprofit organization that helps communities of color defend themselves against animal industries through community organizing and activism. Factory Farming Awareness Coalition is a California based nonprofit organization that educates and empowers individuals and communities to support just and sustainable food systems. Afro Vegan Society is a national nonprofit organization with a mission to provide resources and support to help people in marginalized communities transition to vegan living. The Veggie Jackets are a Georgia Tech student organization focused on advocating for a plant-based lifestyle for the animals\, the planet\, and our health. \nWe are meeting to talk about the documentary\, The End of Medicine. This documentary explores the correlation between the treatment of animals and emerging health threats. You can watch the film for free HERE. Dr. Aysha Akhtar will be joining us at the start of the event for a special guest Q&A! You will first watch the film on your own prior to our event. For the event we will meet on Zoom\, where you participate in three rounds of small group discussions with a different discussion prompt and different randomized groups for each round. This gives you the opportunity to hear a variety of perspectives throughout the night. Following the discussions\, we will have the special guest Q&A! Then we will end the night with final words and announcements from No Lost Generation. Again\, you must watch the film on your own BEFORE the event. You will receive the Zoom link and password once you register for the event. \nIf you have any questions or would like to be added to the email list\, please contact CommunityDocumentaryNight@gmail.com. \nTo learn more about Community Documentary Night and our past events\, check out our website HERE. \nWe have generated a set of norms and expectations for our event. They were created to help us maintain a welcoming and civil environment for everyone in attendance. Please read through before attending. They will also be recited at the start of the event. \n1. This event is open to all who are open to all. This is an inclusive event. We are open to anyone including all gender expressions\, racial identities\, political affiliations\, etc. as long as you are open to hearing the perspective of others. \n2. Step Up and Step Back. Step up meaning we ask that you step up and share your perspective so that we can learn and grow from your knowledge and experience. Step back meaning we ask that you step back on occasion\, allowing yourself the opportunity to hear and grow from the experience and perspectives of others in attendance. \n3. Allow others to express their full thought. This is just a nice way of saying try not to interrupt. \n4. Be mindful of others wanting to speak. Try to keep your thoughts concise\, allowing time for others to respond. \n5. If you don’t agree\, this is not a debate but a discussion. So instead of trying to sway the other person\, try to understand where they are coming from. That can be done by asking “What makes you think that?” This requires coming from a place of curiosity rather than competition. \n6. But even though it’s not a debate\, feel free to challenge what is said. Not in saying “You’re wrong.” But by sharing the idea that you have and asking how that fits with what they just shared. This allows for both ideas to be in the same space and gives the other person an opportunity to explain their thinking. \n7. Assume good intentions. We are all here to learn and grow together. If something does not sound right\, ask first for clarification before jumping to conclusions. \n8. If there is an issue\, speak up in the moment\, if at all possible. Some may not realize that what they said had a negative impact on those in the room. Speaking up can give them the opportunity to correct what they said. \n9. If it is not possible to resolve amongst yourselves\, request that the host join your room. Once he enters your breakout room you can explain the situation or send him a private message if you are not comfortable stating the problem openly. If you would rather wait till after the event\, feel free to email the host at CommunityDocumentaryNight@gmail.com\, then we can figure out a way of resolving the issue for future events. \n10. It’s ok to eat on video. This event occurs around dinner time for many of us. So feel free to eat while participating in the discussion. We just ask that you mute yourself while you are chewing
