SUMMARY:[CANCELLED] Hike: Prince William Forest National Park\, Triangle\, VA
DESCRIPTION:[CANCELLED] Join us for a hike through the largest protected natural area in the DMV\, Prince William Forest Park. Encompassing over 18\,500 acres and rich in history\, this land was once home to an enclave of formerly enslaved people which was gradually converted from the late 1930’s to national parkland. \nWe’ll meet in front of the Visitors Center and take the Laurel Loop Trail beyond the picnic area to the right. From there we’ll pick up a loop trail that winds through one of the country’s best examples of Eastern Piedmont forest. If we’re lucky we’ll see evidence of the park’s wildlife\, including beavers\, deer\, and squirrels. \nThis hike is rated as difficult largely due to its length and terrain. Prepare to encounter uneven and possibly muddy woodland trails\, with 600 feet of elevation gain\, by wearing sturdy hiking shoes and appropriate clothing. \nPark map: https://www.nps.gov/prwi/planyourvisit/maps.htm \nThis event is for those who are fully vaccinated only. Also please do not attend if you are sick or have been near someone who thinks they may have or have been exposed to COVID-19. \nTransportation: Park at the Pine Grove Picnic Area. We’ll meet in front of the adjacent Visitors Center. Note that there is a $20 fee to enter the park\, which is waived for U.S. National Park Service annual or lifetime pass holders. If you can offer a ride\, please post in the comments section with metro station or other accessible location for pick up. Carpooling is a great way to meet people and help the environment! \nDog friendly?: Yes. Please keep your dog leashed at all times. \nBathroom Facilities: None. \nFood/Water: Bring your own vegan snacks and (non-alcoholic) beverage to enjoy mid hike. Please carry plenty of water! \nWeather: Be prepared! We will hike rain or shine\, but if conditions pose a danger\, we’ll cancel the hike and post a notice in the “comments” section. We suggest that hikers wear comfortable footwear and suitable clothing made from quick-dry\, synthetic fabrics\, as cotton can lead to uncomfortable blisters and life-threatening hypothermia in case of inclement weather. \n*For important updates regularly monitor the “comments” section below.*\n*Don’t be a no show! If your plans change\, update your RSVP.*\n*When you sign up to join a hike you automatically acknowledge\nVSDC hikes Liability Waiver: https://vsdc.org/activity-waiver/ and agree to abide by our harassment policy https://vsdc.org/policies/*\n*Please also view the Rules listed at the end of this description*\n*Please read The 10 Essentials of Hiking: https://americanhiking.org/resources/10essentials/ * \nRULES \nPets: When hikes are organized in dog-friendly areas\, hikers are invited to bring their pet(s). However\, dogs are the sole responsibility of the owner(s) who brought them; should be up-to-date on their vaccinations & in possession of the relevant tags; and should be under the control of their owner(s) at all times. Dogs that demonstrate consistently aggressive or otherwise out-of-control behavior will be banned from future hikes. Owners should come prepared to dispose of their dogs’ waste in appropriate receptacles. \nAlcohol/Smoking/Intoxicants: Use of intoxicants such as alcohol\, cigarettes and/or illegal substances is banned during the hikes.\n— \nVSDC (http://www.vsdc.org) is a clear and consistent voice for improving the lives of all beings through education on the benefits of a vegan diet & lifestyle. Join us on this early October evening for a beautiful evening picnic under the lights\, as we order order take-out from the numerous nearby vegan and vegan-friendly restuarants. \nTwo of the newest restaurants are **PLNT Burger** and **Mas Veggies Vegan Taqueria**. Also new to most of us is **Anita Gelato**\, a **(non-vegan)** dessert venue with **TEN vegan ice cream and gelato options.** \n**Take your pick: Get take-out from one or SEVERAL of the vegan and vegan-friendly venues on the list below\, and THEN ***meet us in Madison Square Park in the picnic area by the Shake Shack*** for a sprawling veg*n take-out picnic. We’ll be putting the tables and chairs together into one\, hugely-long table — you’ll see it!** \n**1. PLNT Burger – ALL-VEGAN**\n1147 Broadway (bet. SUMMARY:Diwali Veg*n Lunch with Tour of Hindu Temples #FlushingQueens
DESCRIPTION:Dear Friends\,\nYou may or may not be aware of the completely authentic Hindu temples that are in Flushing\, Queens NY. They are magnificent works of art and profound places of worship and centers of spiritual wisdom. They are numerous\, and several are very close together — within one or two blocks of each other. As we did host this event back in the Year 2013\, 2015 and 2018\, we received more favorable comments than any event we have ever done. People were very moved by this window on to another world — and a profoundly beautiful and spiritual world at that – we are excited to take you on another Hindu Temple tour\, again in 2022. \nWe plan on visiting (3) Hindu temples today – If time permits we will cover 2 more. \nFirst Temple:\nGanesh Temple\n45-57 Bowne Street\, Flushing\, NY 11355\nhttp://www.nyganeshtemple.org/\nTemple represents Dravidian (Southern India) Architecture – First Hindu temple in North America. We’ll meet here for Veg*n lunch @11:00 am – 1:00 pm\, Tour temple/ deities @ 1 – 2 pm followed by Q&A session with temple authorities. \nSecond Temple:\nShirdi Sai Baba Temple\n46-16 Robinson St\, Flushing\, NY 11355\nhttps://www.dwarakamaishirdi.org/\nTemple represents Shirdi Sai Samadhi Mandir(Near Nashik) Maharashtra\, India. We’ll meet here around 3:00 pm onwards. \nThird Temple:\nHindu Center\n4552 Kissena Blvd\, Flushing\, NY 11355\nhttp://www.hinducenternyc.org/\nTemple represents the place of worship from Northern India. We’ll meet here from 4:30 pm onwards \nIf Time permits\, we will cover the following temples –\nFourth Temple:\nBAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir\n44-38 Bowne Street\, Flushing\, NY 11355\nhttp://www.baps.org/Global-Network/North-America/NewYork.aspx\nTemple represents the place of worship from Swaminarayan sect. \nFifth Temple:\nOm Sai Mandir\n45-11 Smart St\, NY 11355\nhttp://www.omsaimandir.org/\nTemple represents Shri Sai Temple at Devotee’s home. \nWe will be visiting temples during the Diwali (aka Deepavali) period. Diwali is a multi-day Festival of Lights\, and Saturday\, Oct. 22nd is the first day of it. (“Main Diwali” is on Mon. Oct. 24th\, 2022). Celebrated all across India & overseas\, it is a multi-day festival spiritually signifying the victory of light over darkness. \nA quick note about the lunch at the Ganesh temple canteen: We have requested more vegan options during our visit – Food is 100% vegetarian at the canteen but not all vegan. Also\, the food is very reasonably priced compared to anywhere in New York City. You will not find better South Indian Veg*n fare in the Tri-state area. \nAfter lunch\, our group will be touring temples all within walking distance from each other – Temple tour will begin at 1 pm by Holly Ave (bet. Bowne St. and Smart St.) outside Ganesh Temple Entrance – Feel free to join us anywhere on tour\, and it is entirely OK to leave early if you need to. Even visiting just the Ganesh Temple is fantastic. \nWhat to wear: Please dress comfortably\, warm clothes and stay hydrated. As respect to the place of worship\, Please No shorts\, mini skirts and ripped jeans. Shoe can be worn at the temple canteen\, but at all locations while entering the temple\, shoes must be left outside in the designated areas (you can leave socks on). \nTrain/ Bus Directions: Take the Flushing-bound 7 Train to the last stop – Flushing-Main Street Station. Transfer to Q27 bus on Main Street/39th Ave after about 10 mins – 8 stops get off at Holly Ave- Robinson St – walk 234ft to Ganesh temple. Or Transfer to Q65 bus on Main St/ Roosevelt Ave after about 5 mins – 4 stops get off at 45 Ave / Bowne St – walk 0.1 mile to the temple. If you wish\, you could also walk from the Main St. subway station to the temple ~ 1 mile walk\, check for directions on Google Maps. \nDriving and parking directions can be found here https://nyganeshtemple.org/directions on the temple website. \nLooking forward to seeing you on October 22nd\, join us for this profound\, moving\, beautiful experience and Celebrate Diwali with us!! \nThanks\,\nKarthik R \nImage Courtesy: https://untappedcities.com/

SUMMARY:VSDC Virtual Game Night: Fishbowl
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a VSDC remote game night featuring Fishbowl. Fishbowl is a fun and fast-paced virtual guessing game mash up. \nNote: This game is best played on a desktop or laptop computer. The game room will be opened at 7:50 pm for those who need a little extra time getting set up and then locked at 8:10 pm\, so please be on time. \nHere’s how to play: After everyone navigates over to the website\, https://fishbowl-game.com/\, and puts in the code to join the game\, players are asked to write down a few words or phrases on “cards” that will be guessed later. Players are organized into teams and will alternate turns\, giving clues to their teammates to guess as many cards as possible against the clock. The 3 rounds feature: \nTaboo: Use words to describe the word or phrase on the card\, without any acting or gestures. You cannot use any part of the word or phrase! \nCharades: Without words or sounds\, act and use gestures to communicate the word or phrase on the card. \nPassword: You can say exactly one word to describe the word or phrase on the card\, no more! You’ll rely on your team’s memory and association. \nThe team that guesses the most cards across all rounds wins! \nDon’t worry if you’ve never played Fishbowl. All are welcome and we’ll go over the basic rules at the start of the event. There are additional details and instructions here: https://fishbowl-game.com/ if you would like to (re)familiarize yourself with the game. \nBy signing up for this event you are agreeing to abide by our harassment policy https://vsdc.org/policies/ \nDon’t be a no show!
