Chronic illness and obesity have become an epidemic in our country and worldwide. While genetics are often singled out as the culprit, it has become increasingly clear that lifestyle choices are the predominant root cause. Unfortunately, most healthcare providers are not well-educated on the benefits of lifestyle medicine, and focus instead on treating the symptoms of chronic illness with medications and procedures rather than addressing the true underlying pathophysiology. When patients do receive lifestyle guidance from healthcare providers, the information is often piecemeal and and inconsistent.

In order to affect meaningful change through lifestyle, patients must not only be educated on the scientifically proven benefits, but these principles must be regularly reinforced until they become habitual. Given the infrequency that patients are seen for preventative care in a traditional medical practice, this simply isn’t possible or practical. In our current healthcare environment, we have failed to prioritize the importance of empowering patients to make changes that can have a significant impact on improving their own health.

The Vibrant Beat is a comprehensive lifestyle center with a mission of bridging the gap between paternalistic traditional medical care and self-efficacious management of one’s own well-being. The purpose is to help individuals achieve ideal health by optimizing the principles of lifestyle medicine including plant-based nutrition, physical fitness, mental well-being, stress management, substance abuse counseling, and adequate sleep.

The center is meant to serve as a community where patients will receive consistent health messages that will be reinforced by providers, and supported by other clients. Our goal is not only to educate, but to provide patients with practical skills that will ensure long-term success. Beyond individual counseling and group lectures, we will teach healthy food preparation in our on-site kitchen and provide fitness instruction in our state-of-the art functional fitness gym.

We also recognize that the success of an individual implementing lifestyle change often improves with strong social support. As such, we welcome families and friends to partake in group counseling, fitness classes and cooking demonstrations.

Our ultimate goal is to remind people that their genes are not their fate, and to empower them with the knowledge and skills to live healthy, active lives.
