Picnic Performance in Bryant Park: The Hot Sardines Featuring Nellie McKay

July 29 @ 5:45 pm - 9:30 pm GMT-0400

Let’s enjoy a lovely summer evening with the great jazz music and vegan food by attending a picnic performance at Bryant Park. The whole summer, Bryant Park is bringing a diverse lineup of acts from New York City’s performing arts institutions to the public every Friday night. On Friday, July 29th Carnegie Hall Citywide will present the performance by **The Hot Sardines Featuring Nellie McKay**.

Fueled by the belief that classic jazz feeds the heart and soul, **The Hot Sardines** is making a name for itself as “one of the best jazz bands in New York today” (Forbes). The Hot Sardines have performed at the Newport and Montreal jazz festivals, sold out venues from Chicago to New York to London, and reached the top spot on the iTunes jazz chart. In this free performance in Bryant Park, they welcome guest vocalist **Nellie McKay**, a first-rate entertainer described as a “renegade songwriter with an ultra-flexible Great American Songbook sensibility. McKay finds modern resonances everywhere” (Rolling Stone).

Remarkably, Nellie McKay is vegan and has been an animal activist since the age of seven and weaves her vegan ethics into her work, putting more soul behind her genre-busting brand of music than most of today’s acts. You can check one of her latest interviews about veganism and recent New York initiatives here: [WMNF | Singer-writer-advocate Nellie McKay Discusses New Vegan Meal Element For NYC School Kids, Her Feelings About Doris Day, Her Project With Ethan Coen, And More – WMNF](https://www.wmnf.org/singer-writer-advocate-nellie-mckay-discusses-new-vegan-meal-element-for-nyc-school-kids-her-feelings-about-doris-her-project-with-ethan-coen-and-more/)

The performance is free to the public and designed to be enjoyed casually—no tickets or registration required—with seating available and free picnic blankets to borrow from the park. These performances are popular, so we recommend you bring your own blanket.

You may bring your own food or purchase on site from a rotating line-up of local NYC vendors near the lawn. There are usually some vegan or easily customizable to be vegan options available and there is always *Better Cookies For A Better Planet* stand with delicious vegan cookies of various flavors. We know that not everyone who comes to our meet-up is vegan, but as a sign of respect to the fellow vegan members and to us, organizers, we are kindly asking you to **buy and bring only animal-free food and beverages for this picnic**.

You can also get vegan snacks or take out from several places within walking distance from Bryant Park: Whole Foods Market is directly across the street on 6th Avenue, Vegan On The Fly with delicious gyro sandwiches at 24 West 45th Street, between 5th & 6th Aves; Beyond Sushi at 134 West 37th St. (bet. 7th & Broadway) and Beatnic (formerly By Chloe) at 1 Rockefeller Center (48th Street bet. 5th & 6th Aves.) If you choose this route, please make sure you grab your take out before you meet with our group.

**Where To Meet**: We will meet at 5:45 pm right on the corner of 42nd Street and 6th Ave (the Bryant Park corner of this street intersection). You will easily spot a group of friendly-looking people. 🙂 (Also, you can just ask us if we are with the veg meetup.) At 6:00 pm we will walk into the park and find a spot to sit on the lawn closer to the stage. Once we find a spot, we will post our location relative to the stage in the comments to this event. As picnic performances are popular, we will most likely be sitting in several smaller groups. Also, if you arrive later, you might not be able to join our groups during the concert, but you will still be able to enjoy the performance from outside of the lawn and join our groups once the show ends.

The show starts at 7 pm and usually ends around 8:30 pm. We will continue enjoying our picnic and conversations for some time after that.

Looking forward to the evening of awesome music in the company of amazing people!
